Welcome

Welcome to Number 1 Albums, the web version of The Billboard Book of Number One Albums, originally published in 1996 by Billboard Books/Watson-Guptill. A few quick notes to visitors…

You may notice that the dates begin in 1956. Obviously I haven’t been posting that long, but I thought it would be best to post using the actual dates that the albums went to Number One so that the titles appear in the proper chronological order. I plan to post all the albums featured in the book, 423 in total, ending with the Beatles Anthology 1 in 1995, and occasionally add entries on albums that topped the chart after the book was published. For more information, please read the Introduction.

All text is copyright © 1996-2009 by Craig Rosen.

The chart information is from Billboard, where I worked for nearly a decade between 1989 and 1998 and continue to freelance for on occasion.

A note to copyright holders of the material linked from YouTube: This site is meant as a tribute to the Number One albums of years past, some of which have become obscurities despite their one-time chart-topping status. I’m providing the YouTube links to give visitors a taste of the music featured on these albums and have also provided links to Amazon to make it easy for the visitors to purchase the featured titles if they’re so inclined.

That said; if you’re an official representative of the artist or label and would like me to remove the YouTube link, please send me an email at buzz_hyper@yahoo.com.

Thanks for stopping by,

Craig Rosen

I just bought your book (13 years too late!!!) and I LOVE this book!! Are you going to release a newer version (or will it be online only)? Also, I would like to know if you accept any corrections to the information?

    Thanks very much!

      Pete,

      Thanks....Glad you like it.

I haven't pursued publishing an updated version yet but if you know any publishers that are interested, please send them my way. Billboard Books gave me back the copyright several years ago, hence my ability to post it online. I plan to post the entire book one entry at a time and eventually fill in the gaps.

As far as corrections, please send them along and I'll check it out.

Just curious, how'd you find the site? Which entries did you enjoy the most?

      Best,

      Craig Rosen

        Hi Craig,

I stumbled across your website while searching for some number one album titles. Once I saw the site, I hunted down your book and purchased it online. Please give me a chance to read the entire book and I'll give you some feedback later on. I don't know of any publishers, however, I would definitely buy the book.

As of now, I only have one correction:
Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! was number one on January 9, 1961, not January 1. If I happen to find more, do you want me to blog them here?

          Hi Pete,

Nice to know. ..You can either comment here or email me at buzz_hyper@yahoo.com (that's buzz underscore hyper at yahooo.com). Let me confirm your correction and if you're right, I'll definitely include it when I post that album.

          Thanks for your interest,

Hey, I think the Bob Newhart album had the one about salt and butter. But, The Chuck's bike story might be an unreleased track on a cd.

Could be...I looked at the titles and didn't see anything about bikes or butter...Perhaps I should post those Newhart albums based on popluar demand.

Pretty cool book as I remember it, too. By the way is that the Newhart album on which he does the story about the guy who stole Chuck's bike? Or did that routine ever make it onto an album?

        Emett,

        Thanks for the kind words.

To tell you the truth, I don't know the answer to your questions about Newhart off the top of my head, but I'll see if I can figure it out when I get around to posting his Number 1s.

        Best,

        Craig

Nice site, Craig. I don't have an e-mail address for you and the phone # I had isn't in service either, and Baltutis never answered an e-mail I sent him asking for your contact info (typical). The reason I'm writing is that I've got the Beastie Boys trophy in my office waiting to be picked up by you any time. (Well, any time I'm here.) Please contact me if you still want it.

    Best,

    Dave
